Tennessee Governor Bill Lee enacted House Bill 2814, which elevates the penalty for illegal street drag racing from a Class A misdemeanor to a Class E felony. Eleven members of the Tennessee House of Representatives opposed the bill, among them Representatives Antonio Parkinson and Justin Pearson. In the Tennessee Senate, four senators, including Senator London Lamar, voted against it.

The penalty for illegal drag racing could result in up to six years of imprisonment and a $3,000 fine. The law does not alter the penalty for reckless driving, which continues to be a misdemeanor under state law.
